Elsbeth inhaled, savoring the scent of roses wafting into the air as she sauntered down the elongated parterre that led to Versailles’s celebrated Hall of Mirrors. Versailles was a sprawling complex of masterful French architecture that spanned more than a thousand acres. Its central point was the stunning castle itself.
Masses thronged the castle grounds, which were open to the public. The crowds were largely made up of French, British, and American soldiers. But there were also journalists as well as hundreds of civilians.
In short, it was the perfect mix for the four other German agents on her team to remain invisible until Elsbeth was ready to unleash havoc.
