This question came up at a recent writer’s conference and I thought that I’d share my perspectives in video format as well as text.
Beta readers are folks you invite to read your book ahead of its release and give feedback. I encourage authors to have a few betas on hand and to use different ones with each novel.
Here are 3 reasons beta readers are a must for any author
- They can identify problems with your plot.
- In today’s hypersensitive culture, beta readers—or separate “sensitivity readers”—can identify parts of your plot that readers might find objectionable and might earn you critical reviews.
- Betas can post advance reviews about your book.
It’s a good idea to rotate your beta readers. Get different perspectives by giving different titles to different groups.

The one thing to keep in mind is that, if you take everything betas suggest to heart, they can cause you to lose your voice. Be selective in receiving their feedback. Be cautious and make sure that the final product reflects your voice.
